- Save Ag and Open Space: sign petition to renew Measure J
February 21, 2008 - Initiative to extend Measure J
For the past 17 years, Measure J has succeeded in protecting valuable agricultural lands in the County from the encroachment of urban development.
NCFB along with ag supporters throughout the community are now asking voters to sign an initiative petition to update and extend Measure J to the year 2058. Approximately 6,000 signatures of voters within
Napa
County are needed to qualify the Measure J extension for the November 2008 election.
To sign the petition or help with the signature drive, please call the NCFB office at 224-5403 or email

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Measure J?
Measure J is an initiative passed by
Napa
County voters in 1990 to protect agricultural and open space lands. In essence, Measure J took away the power of the Board of Supervisors to re-designate lands in Agricultural Resource and Agricultural Watershed and Open Space General Plan areas to non-agricultural uses, without a prior vote of the people.
What’s different in this initiative to extend Measure J?
There are 3 new provisions:
1. Measure J is extended for 50 years to 2058.
2. Provisions were included to clearly allow the county to meet state mandated laws regarding the county’s affordable housing needs.
3. The 160 acre minimum parcel size for lands designated Agricultural Open Space and Watershed in the Napa County General is protected.
Why are we extending Measure J now?
After 17 successful years of land protection, we want to show the community’s support and extend Measure J for 50 more years.
